Abstract

817,903. Variable capacitors; circuit assemblies. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 27,1957 [May 25,1956], No. 16190/56. Class 37. [Also in Groups XL (b) and XL (c)] A variable capacitor for use in a V.H.F. tuning circuit comprises two spaced conducting elements 2, 3 of a transmission line, constituting the stators of a split stator capacitor, a tuning member 6 adjustable axially of said line, and a dielectric 1 having a temperature coefficient of expansion and a permittivity which varies with temperature so as to neutralize frequency changes in the circuit caused by temperature variation. A hollow cylindrical member 1 of ceramic, such as steatite, supports at one end two silver line elements 2, 3 which are separated by longitudinal gaps; and a cup-shaped tuning plunger 6 of silver-coated brass is adjustably mounted in the lower part of said cylinder. Introduction of a desired length of the plunger between the elements provides a capacity between each element and the plunger, and this is maintained constant on the longitudinal expansion of members 2, 3 and 6 by the compensating properties of the dielectric. Additives, e.g. calcium, barium, or magnesium titanate, cause the steatite to have a negative positive or zero coefficient of expansion, and a permittivity which decreases as its temperature increases. In an alternative construction, the line elements and the tuning member are tapered. Quartz, glass, or plastic dielectric may be used in place of ceramic. The capacitor is screened by a metallic cylinder 12. Assemblies. Fig. 2 shows the capacitor, with the screen 12 removed, embodied in an oscillator circuit. The circuit comprises, in addition to the variable capacitor, inductors LI, 12, output coil 17a and resistor Rlmounted between metal discs 7, 8, fixed capacitors C1, C2, C3 formed as insulating bushes whose inner surfaces have a metal coating and mounted within holes in the disc 8, and a valve housed within a screen 13 arranged above the disc 7. The circuit also comprises two further indicators, not shown.
