Abstract

<PICT:0817814/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0817814/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0817814/IV (a)/3> Apparatus for wet-spinning synthetic filaments comprises a container for a liquid coagulant, said container having a bottom wall which is so sloped that there is a greater depth of liquid coagulant at the filament-forming end section of the container than at the opposite end where the filaments leave the container, means for introducing liquid coagulant to the filament-forming end section of the container including a compartment located under this section having an opening in its upper wall, said upper wall constituting a portion of the bottom wall of the container, means for introducing liquid coagulant into the compartment to flow through the compartment and via the opening into the container, and means for removing the liquid coagulant from the container at the opposite end where the coagulated filaments leave the container. As shown in plan and perspective respectively in Figs. 1 and 2, the spinning solution is introduced into a liquid coagulant confined in an assembly of containers 10 (of which there may be 2 to 50) from individual filament-forming assemblies 34. The liquid coagulant is introduced into the end-section 16 of each container 10 through a manifold compartment 26 having openings 28 corresponding to the number of containers in its upper wall 30 which constitutes a portion of the bottom wall 14 of the assembly of containers 10. The liquid coagulant is introduced into the compartment 26 through an inlet conduit 32 (Fig. 2). The bottom wall 14 of the containers 10 is so sloped that there is a greater depth of liquid coagulant in the end-sections 16 of the containers than at the opposite ends 18 where the coagulated filaments 20 leave the containers. Each container is provided with end walls 22 and with parallel side walls 24. The bottom wall 14 of each container is preferably horizontal at the end section 16 and begins to slope upwards in the direction of filament travel from the edge 38 which is in the same plane as the vertical wall 40 of the compartment 26. The assembly of containers has the general configuration of a trapezoid when viewed in plan and adjacent containers share a common side wall 24 in the form of a baffle. The filament-forming assemblies 34 are each composed of a spinneret head 44 (Fig. 3) and a spinneret face 46 (Figs. 1 and 3). The spinning solution is fed to each assembly through a conduit 48 (Fig. 2), a heat exchanger 54 provided with inlet and outlet conduits 56 and 58 for a fluid heat exchange medium, a hollow trunnion 50 and a conduit 52 leading into the spinneret head 44. The spinneret head 44 may be moved from the spinning position A to the dripping position B and vice versa by swinging it about the axis of the trunnion 50 (Fig. 3) which is so oriented that the spinneret face remains in the same plane. The drippings from the spinneret are caught in the trough 60, flow down its sloping bottom to the outlet 62 (Fig. 1), and drain away through conduit 64 (Fig. 3), to a recovery system (not shown). The liquid coagulant overflowing from the containers 10 at the edge 40 first passes through a wire screen 66 (Fig. 2) and then into the trough 68 from which it is withdrawn through conduits and recirculated through the apparatus. The bundles of filaments leaving the containers 10 are guided by godets 74 mounted on the apron 72 which slopes towards the trough 68 (Fig. 2).
