Abstract

Butadiene is polymerized alone or copolymerized with styrene in the presence of metallic lithium and/or a lithium hydrocarbon and in the absence of oxygen or oxygen-containing compounds. Metallic lithium is used as a finely-divided dispersion in petroleum jelly, a mineral oil or paraffin boiling above 200 DEG C. Suitable hydrocarbon lithiums and polylithiums including various alkyl, aryl and aralkyl lithiums and polylithiums of which a large number are specified. The amount of catalyst may be such as to provide 0.001 to 1.0 gram as lithium element per 100 grams of monomer. Temperatures from 0-100 DEG C. can be used. Liquid or vapour phase polymerization is used depending on the temperature and pressure and bulk or solution technique may be used, suitable inert solvents being pentane, hexane, heptane, petroleum ether, benzene, cyclopentane, and cyclohexane. Oxygen, other components of air, and water should be avoided, e.g. by charging the reactants under helium or argon, venting about 10 per cent of the charge and sealing the reactor. Also the monomers and solvents should be pure, and are preferably given a final purification by passing through a silica gel column. The catalyst is preferably added last. The reaction product is immersed in methanol or isopropanol containing an anti-oxidant which destroys the catalyst, precipitates the polymer and incorporates the anti-oxidant. Specification 603,630, [Group XIII], is referred to.
