817,571. Nucleonics. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 10, 1945 [May 8, 1944], No. 11801/45. Class 39(4). Neutron absorption in a moderator is determined by measuring two different density distributions of thermal neutrons within a mass of the moderator. By using a Ra-Be source 29 of fast neutrons the thermal neutron densities in a rectangular block 24 of graphite are measured by means of indium or rhodium foil 19 inserted successively in slots 30. These measurements are made with firstly cadmium foil 25 surrounding the block on six sides and secondly with the cadmium sheet on the top of the block removed. The densities may be measured in a sphere of graphite with a central neutron source firstly with a cadmium sheet wrapped around the sphere and then with it removed, the sphere being in a tank of water or paraffin for all measurements. Similarly absorption in beryllium or heavy water can be measured. The diffusion length is calculated from the results obtained.
