817,051. Diffraction gratings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1955 [Oct. 14, 1954], No. 29643/54. Class 97(1) A long diffraction grating is cast in sections from a short master grating (e.g. a replica grating of hardened dichromategelatine) using a transparent stable resin which can be cold set, and discontinuities at the boundaries of each section are avoided by overlapping and aligning the master with the rulings of the previous section. Preferably, for the first section, liquid resin is poured on to a sheet of glass and the master grating placed face down on the liquid and pressed to squeeze out excess. As shown, subsequent sections are cast in the space 12 by liquid resin attracted between the master grating 1 and glass plate 5 by capillarity. The surface of a large plate 5 may be greyed for better adhesion on a small plate and may have a layer of silicon monoxide deposited on its surface in vacuo or tin oxide by cathode spluttering followed by calophony in alcoholic solution. The cold-setting resin may be unsaturated polyester of a polyhydric alcohol and a poly basic acid with or without the addition of a monomer such as styrene to promote cross-linking. The resin may be Marco 28C and may contain. 1 per cent of silicone oil to facilitate separation from the master grating when the latter is also of resin. Apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown) for effecting separation is described. For transmission gratings the refractive indices of the plate 5 and resin 4 are made as nearly equal as possible. Reflection gratings may be aluminized. Very fine wire spacers 11 may be used for locating the master grating.
