Grooved cardboard or like discs 1, 2, provided with a stiffening or binding agent but unhardened, are first smoothed at 4. They are then placed with grooved faces touching and grooves crossing, and a ring 3, e.g. of the same material is added. Hardening is then effected, a one-piece filter element being thereby formed, and the ridges connected together adhesively. Alternatively cardboard fibres 8 may be provided between two discs, 5, 6, which may, as shown, be smooth, and the fibres may be hardened and adhered to the discs during manufacture. Where the discs are grooved only the grooved faces need be stiffened. The discs may be grooved on both faces, and they may consist of papier-mache or filter paper. Several elements are clamped between fixed end discs on a perforated tube or triangular section member. The intermediate rings 3 may be loose instead of secured to the elements.
