Abstract
Sintered magnesia articles are produced by shaping finely divided magnesia or a finely divided compound of magnesium (other than magnesium sulphate) which decomposes thermally without melting to form magnesia into bodies of the desired form using 6-25 per cent by weight of the total magnesium content calculated as magnesia, of magnesium sulphate as a binder and heating said bodies above the sintering temperature (about 1100 DEG C.) to decompose the magnesium sulphate. Specified magnesium compounds are the carbonate, oxide and hydroxide, e.g. magnesite and brucite; a suitable magnesium hydroxide (which may contain sufficient magnesium sulphate) may be prepared by the process of Specification 693,108 or a mixture of oxide and hydroxide may be prepared by treating in aqueous suspension burned dolomite with an equivalent quantity of magnesium chloride and removing the so-formed calcium chloride liquor or a product already containing magnesium sulphate may be obtained by partly decomposing kieserite, e.g. in in a rotary kiln. The magnesium sulphate may be synthetic or natural, e.g. Epsom salt or kieserite. The shaped unsintered mixture of magnesium sulphate and other magnesium compound may contain 4-75 per cent by weight of water. A shaft or rotary kiln may be employed for the sintering, which should preferably be performed at a temperature rising to 1500-1600 DEG C.
