Abstract

815,942. Tanks. PRELOAD CO. Inc. Jan. 24, 1957, No. 2638/57. Class 69 (1). A concrete structure 20 for containing fluids comprises a base 22, an endless prestressed side wall 24 mounted thereon but spaced from the base by a resilient pad 32 of width less than the width of the side wall to permit relative movement between the side wall and the base. A dome 26 may be mounted on the side wall similarly separated therefrom by an elastic pad 32a. In constructing the tank an endless connector 30 is inserted in the base 22 before the concrete sets. A rubber pad 32 is then laid in place and a level base of clay 38, 40 (Fig. 2) is built up on each side of the pad 32 to provide a level bottom surface edge for the side wall. The clay 38, 40 is covered with a paper separator 42. The walls 24 are formed by pouring concrete into a shuttering 44, the upper end of the endless connector being attached by wire 46 to a ring 48 at intervals. The endless connector 30 is made of rubber and prevents fluid leakage from the structure. The rubber pads may be continuous or formed of small intermittent pads. The pad 32 is as narrow as possible consistent with supporting the superimposed load. After the concrete of the wall has set the clay sections 38, 40 are flushed out and the wall is then prestressed by means of wires 36 received in recesses 34 in the walls 24. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the base is provided with an elevated peripheral step 50 and the side wall is formed with a protrusion 52 which overlaps the step 50 to provide a key which will ensure that the tank stays on its base during earthquakes or other shocks. A copper water stop may be substituted for the resilient water stops 30, 130. The dome 26 is mounted on the side wall 24, in a similar manner to the mounting of the side walls on the base, an endless connector 30a and pad 32a being used. As shown in Fig. 6, bolts 64 are set in the side walls. Bonding of the bolts to the concrete is prevented by coating the bolts with a heavy bituminous cover and then further covering them with a pipe sleeve 66 the inside of which has also been coated with a bituminous cover.
