Abstract

815,652. Wheel alignment gauges. MARTEIL, L. R. April 3, 1956 [March 31, 1955], No. 10145/56. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] For checking the angles of camber and caster, the king-pin angles and the parallelism of motor car wheels, a light projector P, Fig. 3, or a mirror 11, Fig. 7, fixed to the wheel is arranged to throw a spot of light on to a sector-shaped scale 6<SP>1</SP> on a scale plate 6 arranged in front or at the side of the vehicle. The mirror 11 reflects light from a projector 3 at the centre of the scale plate 6. The scale plate has two perpendicular support bases whereby the sectorshaped scale may be arranged horizontally as shown in Fig. 3 to measure the king-pin angle, or vertically to measure camber. For measuring the king-pin angle the wheels are raised from the ground, the light projector mounted parallel to the plane of the wheel, the wheel swung to the right and the projector P adjusted to direct the spot of light on to the centre point Q of the scale. The wheel is then swung back to the left and the position of the spot of light on the scale indicates the king-pin angle. For camber the scale plate is tinned on its side, the wheel adjusted so that the spot of light falls on the point Q and the wheel rotated to bring the spot of light on to the graduations. For caster the projector is mounted perpendicular to the plane of the wheel and the scale plate moved to the side of the car. To avoid turning it through 90 degrees the scale plate may have two scales 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 7, at right angles. For measuring toe-in two scale plates such as 6, Fig. 7, are mounted on a bar 8 and the light from the projector 3 is reflected by the mirror 11 on the wheel on to an additional scale 10 on the scale plate. For caster the mirror 11 in Fig. 7 is turned to 45 degrees to project the light on to a scale 6 at the side of the car. In another modification for testing parallelism, a mirror is arranged on the scale plate to reflect the light from the projector fixed to the wheel on to a scale similar to the scale 10 carried by the projector. The various scale plates may be mounted on a portable rigid structure.
