Abstract

In the continuous production of thermoplastic sheets, a filament or band of thermoplastic material is wound on to a rotating member or former, the juxtaposed convolutions are caused to adhere to one another, and the tube so formed is progressively displaced axially relatively to the former, the tube being finally cut axially and opened out into sheet form. The adhesion of juxtaposed convolutions of filament or band may be interrupted after a predetermined length of tube has been produced, and a new length of tube started without interruption of the filament or band. As shown, a drum member 1 is rotatably mounted on shaft 3. Before winding on, the end of the filament is secured to loose ring 9 and when rotation occurs the filament is wound on to drum 1 between ring 9 and nonrotary ring 5, circumferentially adjustable around drum 1, which acts as a stop member. <PICT:0815413/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0815413/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0815413/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0815413/IV (a)/4> <PICT:0815413/IV (a)/5> Nozzle 15 directs adhesive liquid, e.g. acetone, on to the filament immediately before it is wound on to drum 1, or alternatively adhesion may be effected by heating the filaments. The tapering cross-section of ring 5 (Fig. 2) causes axial displacement of the filament being wound over section b but not section a of lateral surface 11 until ring 9 is forced off the drum and a tube consisting of adhered turns of filament is produced. A roller 13 (Fig. 4) rotatable upon spindle 14 extending radially above drum 1 provides an alternative form of stop member. Roller 13 is provided with peripheral groove 17 designed to impart to a filament on contact a substantially square cross-section. Striped tubes or sheets can be produced by winding two or more filaments of different colours and/or different degrees of transparency side by side simultaneously. The tube may be cut along one side as it is being displaced axially over the drum by a knife secured to the drum, the cutting edge of which projects radially outwards, or by a retractable knife 19, as shown in Fig. 5.
