Abstract
815,259. Ampoules. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Sept. 25, 1956 [Sept. 29, 1955], No. 29286/56. Class 81 (1). [Also in Group XXIII] A breakage line is provided on an ampoule 10, Fig. 3, by heat-softening it in the desired region, mechanically nicking it, as by a grooving wheel, to give a groove in region 15, applying pressure to thicken the glass in, or first polishing, the groove region and thereafter abrading the groove region, as by abrasive-blasting, to give the breakage line 15. The abrasive may be aluminium oxide of a mean particle size of 27 microns and the air pressure 55-75 lbs. sq. in. The groove region is thus characterized by a network of small surface flaws of random orientation to give a substantially uniform breaking value, no matter where the breaking force applied. A coating film, as of regenerated cellulose, may be applied to the neck 16 as a thumb protective measure.
