Abstract

815,228. Washing granular materials. HARVENGT, E. Sept. 4, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954; June 7, 1955], No. 26356/55. Class 82(2) Apparatus for separating granular material such as coal and ores from a grading by density has a plurality of means for separating fractions from the grading, and a pocketed wheel discharge device (2) provided with at least two discharge passages (18, 19) leading to the wheel, each passage being connected with one or more of the separating means, whilst the passages terminate adjacent t h e pocket wheel at different spaced locations. These locations may be spaced circumferentially or longitudinally of the wheel, or both. The grading may be by washing troughs, jigs or upward currents. Fig. 1 shows a washing trough 1 with independently controllable separating means grate 4 and adjustable opening 10, through which respectively fine and coarse particles of the lowermost layer in the trough (eg. shale) may pass into passages 18, 19 for discharge into the pockets 14 of the rotated drum 13, the material from 18 partially filling a pocket which is subsequently filled from passage 19. The device works at "full level"; and supporting currents of liquid led in at 5, 11 prevent undesired lesser density particles from passing through the separating means. The actual final discharge occurs at 17. The pockets may have recesses 22, Fig. 2, while the end 20 of partition 21 has a circumferential width in contact with the wheel 13 which is at least equal to that, 14<SP>1</SP>, of a pocket so as to prevent direct contact between adjacent pockets. Part 20 may also be separate, and adjustable radially of the wheel to allow for wear (Fig. 8, not shown). Fig. 10 shows a further arrangement as applied to a washing trough. In Fig. 4 a jig 23 is shown used in conjunction with a washing trough 1 having grating 26 and opening 25 along the trough corresponding respectively to openings 4, 10 of Fig. 1, the discharge products being led to passages 18, 19 terminating at the wheel 13 in longitudinally spaced but circumferentially aligned locations. Fig. 5 shows two jigs 23a, 23b in series, their screens 26a, 26b being in trough 1, and the discharges from 25 and 23b being combined and led to passage 19 while that from 23a passes along passages 18. A linkage 31 driven by the drive 32 of the pocket wheel (and also may of the jig) may be used to actuate obturating devices 27, 35, 37, 39 controlling the movement of products through opening 25, along conduit 33, and out of jig 23b respectively, so that the jigging action shall not be impaired. In the arrangement of Fig. 9 (not shown), products from the screens 26a, 26b of both jigs are combined in the passage 19, that from the outlet 25 being directed along passage 18
