Abstract
Substantially neutral alcohol-soluble synthetic triglycerides are obtained by the esterification with glycerine of a mixture of caprylic and capric acids in the proportions 65-95 and 35-5 per cent respectively, preferably containing the acids in a ratio of at least 2 : 1, which mixture of acids has been obtained by splitting a glyceride oil of the coconut oil group and fractionating the fatty acids obtained. The mixture of acids may also contain up to 5 per cent by weight of caproic and/or lauric acid, which may be present in approximately equal proportions. The invention also comprises a solution of such a triglyceride in a monohydric alcohol having from 1-6 carbon atoms. The triglycerides or their alcohol solutions may be used as carriers for oil-soluble dyes or pigments (see Group IV (c)) or for dietetic, pharmaceutical, medicinal, cosmetic or lubricant substances (see Group VI). The triglycerides may be interesterified with another glyceride oil, e.g. castor oil. The esterification of the mixture of acids with glycerine may be carried out by any suitable process, with or without a catalyst; in Example (1) no catalyst is used, in (2) zinc dust, and in (3) tin dust is used as catalyst. Random distribution of the esters is obtained in many cases, or may be achieved by interesterification using sodium methylate or a similar catalyst as promoter. Specification 549,962, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:Substantially neutral alcohol-soluble synthetic triglycerides, obtained by the esterification with glycerine of a mixture of caprylic and capric acids in the proportions 65-95 and 35-5 per cent respectively, preferably with a ratio of caprylic to capric of at least 2:1 which mixture has been obtained by splitting a glyceride oil of the coconut oil group and fractionating the fatty acids obtained, and which mixture may contain up to 5 per cent of caproic and/or lauric acid, are used as a carrier or vehicle for dyestuffs or pigments. Dyestuffs specified are sulphur dyes such as Indo Carbon Black, vat dyes such as thioindigoid, and azo dyes, such as p-chloro-o-toluidine coupled with diacetyl-acetotoluidine. In example (7) F.D. and C. Yellow (C.I. 61) and chlorophyllin are employed. Specification 549,962, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:Triglycerides suitable for frying, for incorporation in foods to the extent of 20-30 per cent, as carriers for oil-soluble vitamins and food flavourings such as spice extracts, and, in emulsion form or in alcoholic solution, for introduction into the blood stream of patients, are made by esterifying with glycerol a mixture of 65-95 per cent. caprylic and 35-5 per cent. capric acids derived by splitting a glyceride oil of the coconut oil group and fractionating the fatty acids obtained. The fatty acids esterified may contain up to 5 per cent. of lauric and caproic acids. The triglycerides may be inter-esterified with other glyceride oils, e.g. castor oil. Specification 549,962 [Group IV] is referred to.ALSO:Medicines, cosmetics and dentifrice comprise a base consisting of substantially neutral alcohol-soluble synthetic triglycerides, obtained by the esterification with glycerine of a mixture of caprylic and capric acids in the proportions 65-95 and 35-5 per cent respectively, preferably with a ratio of caprylic to capric of at least 2 : 1 which mixture has been obtained by splitting a glyceride oil of the coconut oil group and fractionating the fatty acids obtained, and which mixture may contain up to 5 per cent of caproic and/or lauric acid, or a solution thereof in an alcohol, e.g. a monohydric alcohol containing 1-6 carbon atoms. The triglycerides may be admixed with varying amounts of water, alcohols, gelling agents, thickening agents, emulsifiers, mineral oils and other vehicles. Vitamins such as cod liver, oil and antibiotics may be present. Emulsions or alcohol solutions of the triglycerides may be injected. Other specified preparations are body oils, containing a lubricating mineral oil; a body oil made by emulsifying a triglyceride with water; or facial or body cream, containing lanolin; and a dispersion containing chlorophyllin, which may be incorporated in a toothpaste or dissolved in ethyl alcohol and added to a mouth wash. Specification 549,962, [Group IV], is referred to.
