813,754. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 28, 1956 [June 29, 1955], No. 20007/56. Class 40 (2). In a method of reading intelligence from a magnetic record, an oscillatory motion is caused to occur between record medium and the reading head or heads in a direction substantially normal to the record medium. The method is of particular use in digital computors in which it is merely necessary to detect one of two states, i.e. magnetization or non-magnetization of the medium, irrespective of the velocity of the medium past the reading head/s. Thus when the medium is in a magnetized state, the relative oscillation induces an E.M.F. in the head, but when unmagnetized no E.M.F. is generated. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment in which a head 1 is mounted on a moving coil system associated with the pole 3 of a magnet system. The head is provided with a number of coils 2 so that the head can perform a number of functions of read, record and erase. When reading is being effected, alternating current is supplied to the movable coil. Fig. 4 shows a system in which a number of heads 10 are mounted on a plate 9 coupled to a base plate 7 by a piezo-electric element 8, which is caused to oscillate at its own characteristic frequency by means of an applied voltage. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates an apparatus employing a plurality of such units.
