813,135. Weighing apparatus. HARTNER, K., SEEGER, G., and KUPPER, E., [trading as HARTNER G. [Firm of]]. Aug. 15, 1956, No. 24992/56. Class 143 A precision balance is provided with means for giving an approximate weight of an object prior to the final accurate weighing. This means comprises a damped beam 18 which is movable by a cam 13 into engagement with the undersides of pans 2, 3 and carries a transverse knife 18b which as the beam tilts, successively engages vertically staggered spring strips 15, 16, 17 of increasing stiffness anchored to the fulcrum block 15a. The approximate weight of.an object in pan 2 is indicated on a scale 7 by a pointer 5 which together with a pendulum 4, is pivoted about a fixed knife edge support 10 by a link 8 attached to a yoke 1f on a rod 1e which is rigid with the upper beam 1. Members 19 are attached to the beam 8 by springs 22 which urge them into engagement with the pans. In operation, having ascertained the approximate weight from scale 7 a corresponding weight is deposited in the pan 3, beam 18 is lowered and the precise weight of the object in ;pan 2 is indicated by pointer 5 on scale 6. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the members 19 are urged upwardly by levers pivoted at the ends of beam 18. In a further modification (not shown). springs 15, 16, 17 are replaced by three levers having graded counterweights which are pivoted concentrically to the fulcrum block 15a.
