Abstract

812,875. Gyroscopic apparatus. MINNEAPOLIS-HONEYWELL REGULATOR CO. June 28, 1957, No. 20517/57. Class 97(3) In apparatus wherein electricity has to be conducted between a pair of members which are relatively rotatable through a small angle, one member being pivotally mounted with respect to the other, a flexible lead conducting electricity between the members has its centre of gravity lying on a line which intersects the pivotal axis and passes through the points of attachment of the lead with the two relatively rotatable members. The line may be radial to the pivotal axis, and the lead may be S-shaped or circular. As shown in Fig. 1, a gyroscope has a housing 12 of cylindrical form with a square central flange 14 and grooves 16 for heating and temperature sensitive coils 18. The inner cylindrical surface of the housing has at its left-hand end a flange 22 carrying a member 28 on which the stationary members of a torque generator 24 and a signal generator 26 are mounted. A baffle plate 38 is mounted on a holder 32 fixed to housing 12, and a bearing plate 44 secured to the housing carries a bearing insert 52 comprising a journal bearing 54 and a thrust bearing 56. At the other end of the housing is mounted a member 60 having a recess 66 in which a baffle plate 68 is fixed, and a bearing plate 74 with bearings similar to those borne by plate 44. A gimbal assembly 90 consists of a frame 92 and a cylindrical shell 94 forming a closed system floating in a liquid enclosed in the housing 12. Extensions 108, 110 of the frame 92 form the pivots for the bearing supported by plates 44, 74. Electrical connections to the movable parts of the torque and signal generators 24, 26 are made by way of four pins 120 arranged around extension 108 (see also Fig. 2). The baffle plate 38 has S-shaped recesses 42 with pins 124 at their outer ends, and housing S-shaped leads 126 connected between the pins 120, 124. Connections to the stator 96 of the motor driving the rotor 98 are made through pins 102 connected to terminals 122 mounted on the extension 110 (see also Fig. 3). The baffle plate 68 has circular recesses 72 in which lie circular flexible leads 134 connected to pins 122 and at diametrically opposite points to pins 132 connected to an electric supply. The ends of housing 12 are closed by inner covers 140, 142, of soft iron for electromagnetic shielding, and outer covers 150, 152, apertured to receive header members 144 through which pass electric supply wires and filler tubes 148. A bellows 154 which allows for liquid expansion is located in cover member 142.
