Abstract

In the production of hot-pressing quality naphthalene from naphthalene oil by cooling to crystallize at least part of the naphthalene, passing through a worm press having apertures through which oil is discharged, collecting the oil in at least two fractions the first being obtained nearer the inlet than the second and being comparatively poor in naphthalene but rich in thionaphthene, the second being rich in naphthalene and recycling the second fraction to the starting naphthalene oil, the first fraction is cooled to form crystallized naphthalene solidifying at about 68 DEG C. and a low naphthalene content oil solidifying below 25 DEG C. the solidified naphthalene is melted and recycled with the second fraction. The chilling of the first fraction is preferably performed batchwise but may be done continuously and the solid and oil separated by centrifuging. The solid may be washed with a selective solvent to remove adhering oil before melting. Specification 766,371 is referred to.
