Abstract
The invention comprises fluoroalkylchloro silanes of the general formula <FORM:0812252/IV (a)/1> where n is 1 or 2, R is a saturated aliphatic or an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, m is 0, 1 or 2, and m + n is not greater than 3, and siloxanes produced by hydrolysis of these silanes. The silanes are prepared by reacting 2-trifluoromethylpropane with silanes of the formula HnSiRmCl24-m-n, optionally in the presence of catalysts such as activated platinum on charcoal, and at 150-300 DEG C. The silanes are useful per se as water repellents for ceramics; and the siloxanes as lubricants or intermediates for the production of solvent resistant resins and rubbers. The examples describe the preparation of 2 - trifluoromethylpropyl - methyldichloro-, trichloro -, dimethylchloro -, phenyldichloro-, octadecyldichloro - and xenyldichloro - silanes and bis - (2 - trifluoromethylpropyl) dichlorosilane; the cyclic trimer and tetramer and higher polymers of 2-trifluoromethylpropyl methylsiloxane, and the siloxanes (including disiloxane) prepared from the other silanes specified above.
