Abstract

Aqueous suspensions of finely divided organic solids are clarified by incorporating in the suspension at least 0,01 pound (per short ton of suspended solids) of a water-soluble sulphonate (i.e. a sulphonic acid or salt thereof) derived from a high molecular weight poly (vinyl-aromatic) compound of the benzene series to increase the rate of sedimentation of the suspended solids. The aqueous suspension may be a waste water which must be clarified before discarding or reuse, and may be derived from a cannery, a sugar refinery or coal-washing plant. The sulphonates may be derived from polymers of stryrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene or vinyl xylene, or from linear copolymers of such materials with one another or with acrylic monomers (i.e. acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or the lower alkyl-esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Ammonium, lithium sodium, potassium and calcium salts of the sulphonic acids are mentioned. The sulphonates may be added to the aqueous suspensions in the form of aqueous solutions or they may be introduced as a finely divided solid in admixture with a finely divided inert solid. Before the sulphonate treatment, lime (in the form of finely divided calcium hydroxide or oxide, milk of lime or calcium hydroxide solution) may be added to the aqueous suspension. In the examples, (a) an aqueous slurry of coal fines from a coal crushing and cleaning milk, or a limed aqueous waste slurry of pea soup solids from a soup cannery, is treated with the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid derived from polyvinyltoluene or vinyl-toluene/acrylonitrile copolymer, (b) the aqueous slurry of coal fines is treated with free polyvinyltoluene sulphonic acid and (c) waste water from a beet sugar refinery is limed and treated with the sodium salt of polyvinyltoluene sulphonic acid or the potassium salt of polystyrene sulphonic acid. Specification 746,616 [Group IV(a)] is referred to.ALSO:Aqueous suspensions of finely divided solids are clarified by incorporating in the suspension at least 0.01 pound (per short ton of suspended solids) of a water-soluble sulphonate (i.e. a sulphonic acid or a salt thereof) derived from a high molecular weight poly-(vinyl-aromatic) compound of the benzene series to increase the rate of sedimentation of the suspended solids. In an example, first carbonation juice from a beet sugar refinery is treated with the sodium salt of polyvinyltoluene sulphonic acid. Specification 746,616, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.
