Abstract

"Tone-in-tone" pattern effects on textile materials of wool or hair are produced by submitting the material to selective irradiation with ultra-violet light according to the desired pattern effect, and then dyeing. Selective irradiation may be effected by masking the material according to the desired pattern, a cut-out sheet or built-up baffle being interposed between the source of light and the material and a gradual merging or fading of the pattern effect being obtained by disposing the mask at a distance from the material. Alternatively, the ultra-violet lamps may be so disposed that the textile is submitted to varying degrees of irradiation across its width. The irradiation period may be reduced by pretreating the textile with an oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, which is unstable under ultra-violet light. Enhanced effects are obtained by incorporating a "retarding agent" in the dyebath. Dyestuffs which will dye chlorinated and unchlorinated wool to different extents are preferably employed, specified dyestuffs being acid, mordant and prematallized dyestuffs. Examples are given.
