[Also in Group XXX] An apparatus for checking the size of gear wheels comprises means for receiving a gear-wheel from a source of supply and automatically locating the gear in a desired position and orientation in the apparatus, and means operable in timed relationship with the locating means for checking the gear. As shown, gears 16, Fig. 1, on a conveyer belt 18 enter a shoot 30 that turns them into a vertical plane so that they may roll down a pair of inclined racks 44 having teeth 46, Fig. 4, to a lever 48 which can oscillate to permit one gear at a time to roll on to a stop member 52. A pressure plate 64, Fig. 2, then moves against one side face of the gear-wheel to hold it steady and a checking finger 74 is moved, by spring means 92, into the space between adjacent gear teeth as shown in Fig. 3, the displacement of the finger 74 being transmitted to a dial gauge 122 and to an electric gauge head 236 which is set to operate if the gear-wheel is not within predetermined tolerance limits. As the finger 74 moves away from the gear-wheel the stop member 52 and pressure plate 64 are withdrawn and a lever 208, Fig. 3, is rocked clockwise to displace the stop 52 and strike the gear-wheel 16 to cause it to move on down the track 44. The stop member 52 then moves back into position and a further gear-wheel 16 is released by the lever 48. The actions of the various parts are all controlled in sequence by a number of cams driven by an electric motor 138. If a gear-wheel is no within a predetermined tolerance, the electric gauge head 236 actuates a solenoid 230, Fig. 1, operating a gate 226 to cause rejected gears to roll down a lower shoot 222 to a container 26, otherwise the accepted gears roll down an upper shoot to a container or conveyer belt 24. Impulse means 264, 256 in each shoot are electrically connected to an electric control panel 246 which includes means for stopping a machine making and supplying the gears after a predetermined number of consecutive gears have been determined unacceptable and also when a predetermined percentage of the gears are determined unacceptable.
