811,357. Sealed bearings. BURTONWOOD ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 25, 1957 [July 25, 1956], No. 37221/57. Divided out of 811,356. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A seal for a ball or roller bearing 10 comprises a flat annulus 1 of non-flexible synthetic plastic material having one edge held in a groove 6 in the inner or outer race 7 and a lip portion 5 between which one or more concentric zones 3 of less thickness than the remaining annular zones is or are formed to provide annular flexibility of the lip portion in relation to the holding part so that the lip 5 may be displaced axially relative to the edge held in the groove 6. The lip 5 bears against an arcuate groove in the inner race 8 to provide a line sealing contact. The lip may be displaced from X to Y, Fig. 1, to provide lateral pressure against the sealing surface. The seals may lie wholly within the bearing when in sealing position or they may project therefrom, as when the median plane of the area of reduced thickness 3 is at an angle to the median plane of the seal as a whole. Lubricant may be supplied through one or more self-sealing apertures. Seals of different colours may be used on opposite sides of a bearing.
