Abstract

811,302. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BREMSENG.m.b.H. June 21, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 17847/55. Class 103 (1). In apparatus for the control of fluid pressure brakes, particularly in railway vehicles, an electrical control circuit for governing a vent valve for the brake cylinder, whereby the pressure therein may be reduced to prevent skidding, is operated by the difference in the position of two control elements, the position of one being dependent on the motion of a wheel about its axis, and that of the other upon the motion of a non-rotary part relative to the track on which the wheel is running. The control device is mounted within the bore 8 of a rotating axle and comprises a rotary inertia member 11 which is rotated by the axle through a dog 14 and spring 15 such that if the axle is decelerated or accelerated at more than a certain rate a roller 17 on an arm 16 will move down a slot 18 in the member 11 and cause axial movement of a switching disc 12 such as to engage either contact 33a or 33b. Similarly if there is excessive deceleration or acceleration in the translational movement of the vehicle, a pendulum 22 will tilt and cause movement in the slot 24 of a roller 25 so that the member 32 holding the contacts 33a and 33b is moved axially with respect to the switching disc 12. Thus excessive rotational deceleration of the axle without corresponding translational deceleration, or vice versa, will cause the closure of disc 12 with one or other of contacts 33a or 33b so as to operate an electrical circuit which will reduce the brake cylinder pressure so as to prevent skidding. In this way correct brake control may be applied to the wheels of a railway vehicle in which deceleration is also being produced by magnetic rail brakes. In another embodiment described the movement of the pendulum is coupled with that of the rotary inertia element by means of sun and planet gearing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 662,029 and 766,224.
