Abstract
811,091. Semi-conductor circuits. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 12, 1957 [June 22, 1956],No. 18519/57. Class 40 (6). [Also in Group XXXVII] A circuit which becomes conductive when an A.C. supply voltage applied thereto exceeds a first value and becomes non-conductive when it falls below a second value includes a transistor having its emitter-collector path connected in series with a load across the supply and voltage responsive means which prevents base current flow when the applied voltage is below a predetermined value. In Fig. 1 an A.C. voltage is applied to terminals 14, 15 with the result that the capacitor 3 charges through the leakage resistance of the transistor 4 with the polarity shown. If the voltage of the supply is sufficient the capacitor voltage reaches a value at which a zenner diode 8 breaks down causing the transistor to become more conductive. On the positive half-cycles a capacitor 13 is charged while on the negative half-cycles the supply voltage and the voltage across capacitor 13 act in series and current flows through the transistor to further charge capacitor 3. This continues on successive negative half-cycles progressively charging capacitor 3 until its voltage reaches a limiting value exceeding that of the supply. The transistor is now highly conducting and sufficient current flows to operate a relay 10 or a power transistor connected in its place. If the A.C. supply voltage is decreased the charge across capacitor 3 progres. sively decreases on successive half-cycles until the transistor becomes non-conductive again. The voltage of the supply at which this occurs is less than that at which the transistor became conductive by an amount dependent upon the value of a resistor 9. The change-over from conducting to non-conducting states of the transistor takes an appreciable number of cycles dependent upon the magnitude of the voltage and accordingly the switching time has an approximate inverse time/voltage characteristic.
