Abstract
Alkali metal salts of terephthalic acid are prepared by heating an alkali metal salt or thallium salt of benzoic acid in the presence of an inert organic compound which is liquid under reaction conditions. Suitable organic compounds are e.g. benzene, naphthalene, diphenyl, ditolyl, diphenyl ether, and pyridine, and they may be separated at the end of the reaction by usual methods and reused after purification. Catalysts such as cadmium, zinc, mercury, iron, lead or compounds thereof are preferably present in the reaction mixture. Examples are given of (1) the heating of potassium benzoate in the presence or absence of cadmium fluoride in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide or nitrogen at 450 DEG C.; (2) heating of potassium benzoate and cadmium powder in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide at 440 DEG C. Super-atmospheric pressures are reached in the course of the reactions. Specifications 744,721 and 777,609 are referred to.
