Abstract
C4 to C18 olefins of formula: <FORM:0810210/IV (a)/1> wherein R1 is H or Me and R2 is Me when R1 is Me or otherwise is a saturated C2 to C16 hydrocarbon radicle, are polymerized with a catalyst formed by the reduction of a compound MnXm or Mn(OR)m, wherein M is Ti, Zr, Ce, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W, X is halogen, R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicle and n and m are integers, with a metallic reducing agent, such as a Grignard reagent, a metal alkyl or aryl, a metal hydride, aluminium borohydride, or zinc or metals above zinc in the electromotive series. Olefins specified are isobutylene, butene, pentene, hexene, heptene, octene, nonene, decene, undecene, dodecene, tridecene, tetradecene, pentadecene, hexadecene, heptadecene, and octadecene, and these may also be copolymerized with ethylene or propylene. The preferred catalyst components are titanium tetrachloride and tetrafluoride, zirconium tetrachloride, niobium pentachloride, vanadium tetrachloride, tantalum pentabromide, cerium trichloride, molybdenum pentachloride, tungsten hexachloride, tetra-(2-ethyl hexyl)-titanate, tetrapropyl titanate, octylene glycol titanate, triethanolamine titanate, tetraethyl zirconate, tetra-(chloroethyl) zirconate, lithium aluminium-tetrabutyl and -tetra-(CH2CH2-cyclohexene), and phenyl magnesium bromide (in dibromodiphenyl and diethyl ethers). An inert organic solvent, such as cyclohexane, xylene or toluene, is preferably present, and optionally fillers and pigments may be added. The solvent and/or monomer may be added intermittently or continuously. Subsequent to polymerization the catalyst may be decomposed and the polymer purified with materials such as methanol and/or acetone, aqueous or methanolic sodium hydroxide, acetone/HCl, acetone/water, and xylene. The products are linear and of rubbery character and may be formed into films or drawn into oriented fibres. Compositions with decahydronaphthalene, elastomers, polyethylene and lubricating oil may be obtained.
