810,140. Preparation of paper pulp. ARGUILLERE, J., and PAPETERIES DE LA CHAPELLE. July 24, 1956 [July 27, 1955 ; July 12, 1956], No. 22849/56. Class 96. Hard-wood chips, or cuttings thereof, are defibrated to produce paper-making fibres, by first de-aerating them in an air-tight chamber (not shown, Fig. 1) in the presence of a liquid, e.g. a caustic soda solution, and then feeding them by a screw conveyer 33 into a centrifugal defibrator having an annular grindstone 2, and having hollow rotary paddles 9 supplied with water from a hollow shaft and hollow radial arms 10, the water emerging from holes 16 in the paddles 9 and diluting the pulp near a screening drum 42 so that finer fibres are washed through the holes 43 of the drum 42, the fibres being discharged through a pipe and valve 17. Any chemical liquor used may be strengthened and re-cycled. In a modification, an annular screen occupying a short length of the space taken by the grindstone 2 is used instead of the screening drum 42; or the screening drum may be substituted by a stationary cylindrical enclosure adjacent to the wall 3 of the defibrator.
