Abstract

<PICT:0810005/III/1> An apparatus for continuous dispersion of pigments in film-forming media by agitation in the presence of sand comprises a vertical hollow cylindrical vessel 1 having a slurry inlet at or near the bottom and a screen 5 at or near the top, a shaft 2 having means for rotation thereon extending downwardly in the vessel, and a plurality of spoked annular impellers 3 attached to the shaft. The cylinder is filled with sand of 20 to 40 mesh up to the level of the screen, and a slurry of the pigment and medium pumped continuously upwards by pump 17. The dispersion is collected at outlet 8. An outer jacket 11 which may be heated by water or steam is provided. Finer grinding may be obtained by re-circulating the effluent, by restricting the area of the screen, or by decreasing the feed and output rates. Pigments which may be so dispersed include titanium dioxide, carbon black, barytes, cadmium sulphide, Milori blue, and zinc oxide. Suitable vehicles include alkyd resins, modified or unmodified, raw and treated oils, oleo-resinous varnishes, natural and synthetic resins, oil-modified resins, cellulosic substances, nitrocellulose, butanol-modified urea-formaldehyde resin, silicone resins and emulsions of these substances and plasticisers. The apparatus may also be used for the production of fabric coating compositions of chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and the like with solvents, plasticisers, modifiers and pigments.
