809,897. Stuffing-box substitutes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. July 26, 1957, No. 23765/57. Class 122 (5). A sealing arrangement for an axially movable shaft, for example the piston rod 3 of an hydraulic jack, comprises two axially spaced seals 11 and 12, a leakage space 15 between the seals connected to a sump 18 by a passage 16 controlled by a valve 17 that automatically closes when the pressure in the leakage space exceeds a predetermined value, and a leakdetecting device, for example a pressure gauge 21 or a pressure-operated warning indicator, responsive to the pressure in the leakage space. Normally fluid leakage past the inner seal 11 drains to the sump but if the leakage becomes sufficient to build up the pressure in space 15 to a predetermined value, the valve 17 closes against its spring and the seal failure condition is indicated on the pressure gauge. The outer seal 12 may be periodically tested by turning a cock 22 to close the connection between the sump 18 and the passage 16 and connect the latter to the source 7 of operating fluid pressure for the jack. The ball valve 7 may be replaced by a fine restrictor valve capable of passing normal leakage but insufficient to relieve pressure build up due to inner seal failure.
