Abstract

A therapeutic composition suitable for the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic conditions of the scalp includes as active ingredients a germicidal quaternary ammonium compound and an N-thiotrichloromethyl dicarboxylic acid imide of formula <FORM:0809655/VI/1> wherein R is phenylene, dihydrophenylene or cyclohexylene. The preferred proportions of these compounds are about 0.001 to about 0.2 per cent by weight of the quaternary ammonium compound and from about 0.001 to about 10 per cent by weight of the N-thiotrichloromethyl dicarboxylic acid imide. N-diisobutyl phenoxy ethoxy ethyl N-dimethyl N-benzyl ammonium chloride is preferred, a long list of other suitable compounds is included. Specified thio compounds include N-thiotrichloromethyl-4 - cyclohexene - 1,2 - dicarboximide, N - thiotrichloromethyltetrahydrophthalimide and N-thiotrichloromethyl phthalimide. The composition may include a carrier such as an inert powder or dilute alcohol (in which the active ingredients are dissolved or suspended). Liquid carriers may contain a sorbitan wetting agent, preferably a polyoxyethylene derivative of a sorbitan or sorbitol ester of a fatty acid. An example of the composition is given in the Specification.
