Abstract

In the isomerization of an isomerizable saturated hydrocarbon fraction of average molecular weight not above 72 the fraction is passed in admixture with a recycle, produced as described below, to a first fractionating column from which is obtained overhead a product isoparaffin fraction free of n-paraffins which are obtained as bottoms free of isoparaffins, a minor proportion of these bottoms is fractionated in a second fractionating column, removing as bottoms a fraction of average molecular weight greater than that of the feed and overhead a fraction of molecular weight not greater than that of the feed which overhead is mixed with the major proportion of the bottoms from the first fractionating column and isomerized in contact with a platinum-containing catalyst and the effluent from the isomerization forms the recycle mixed with the feed to the first fractionating column. The feed may be a butane fraction containing n-butane in which case isobutane is removed as product from the first column and C5 hydrocarbons are removed as bottoms from the second column, or a pentane fraction containing n-pentane when isopentane is obtained as product and C6 hydrocarbons removed from the second column. The isoparaffins may be used as such in gasolines or used for alkylation with propylene, butylenes or amylenes to yield higher molecular weight isoparaffins. The catalyst in the isomerization zone may contain 0.01 to 1.0 per cent platinum with a larger amount of combined halogen, e.g. 0.1 to 3 per cent of fluorine and chlorine, supported preferably on alumina or silica-alumina, silica-zirconia or silica-alumina-zirconia. The isomerization is preferably performed in the presence of hydrogen at 3.4-68 atmospheres, 371-510 DEG C., an LHSU of 0.5 to 5 with 0.5 to 5 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of hydrocarbon.
