Abstract

809,342. Slaughtering animals. HORMEL & CO., G. A. Aug. 2, 1956, No. 23933/56. Class 5(1). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for use in the slaughtering of pigs and other slaughter animals comprises a horizontal endless slat conveyer (see Group XXX) which receives the animals from a conveyer X issuing from a chamber in which the animals have been immobilised by anaesthetic, the slats 13 being provided with a depressed grid portion composed of rods 24a welded to the slats at one side of the conveyer to receive the head and forelegs of the animals so that the animals may be slaughtered by sticking them at C to sever the carotid artery and jugular vein, the blood passing through the depressed grid portions into a receiving trough T during travel of the conveyer. The conveyer is of a length such that drainage of blood is complete before reaching the delivery end of the slat conveyer, where the animals are delivered to a soaking and scalding tub Y. A shoot S disposed between the conveyer X and the slat conveyer provides a slide surface enabling each animal to be turned manually into correct position for sticking as it is transferred to the slat conveyer. Immediately after sticking, the animals come into contact with a hold-down conveyer belt 14 supported on end pulleys 15, 16 carried by an overhead frame, one of the pulleys being driven so that the belt moves in synchronism with the slat conveyer. Roller assemblies 17 are mounted on the overhead frame each comprising a roller 1 7b carried between the ends of a pair of pivoted links 17a which are spring-urged to press the roller downwardly against the lower run of the belt 14 so that the belt is pressed against the animals to prevent their moving about on the slat conveyer as a result of reflex actions occurring following sticking. It is said that as a result of the lower position of the head in relation to the body of each animal, all the blood is drained through the cut C before the animals reach the end of the slat conveyer. Blood is pumped away from the trough T through a hose 32. A splash plate 33 is positioned in front of the trough.
