809,297. Strengthening glassware. T. I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. April 5, 1957 [April 6, 1956], No. 10533/56. Class 56. Glass fibre or rod, is strengthened by subjecting its surface to mechanical compression at a temperature in the region of, but below, the normal annealing range and then allowing it to cool under that compression. The mechanical compression may be effected by repeatedly flexing the glass in all directions, or by subjecting it to alternating torsional force, or to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations. Another method, for producing glass fibre or rod, is to slip a glass tube over a rod or fibre of higher coefficient of thermal expansion, heating the composite bar above the softening temperature and then drawing it into a fibre; the different degrees of contraction on cooling put the outer surface under compression and so inhibit the formation of surface cracks.
