Abstract

Azoic dyeings are effected on aromatic polyester fibres or films by applying a heated aqueous alkaline solution or suspension of a primary aromatic amine and a coupling component of the formula <FORM:0809221/IV (c)/1> in which I=a naphthalene or carbazole residue and in which the benzene nucleus "a" may be substituted by one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups or, when I=a carbazole residue, by a halogen atom, the solution or suspension being applied in the presence of a solution promoter for the coupling component such as a partially hydrogenated naphthalene, while the pH of the solution or suspension is being lowered, and finally effecting diazotization of the amine and coupling of the diazo compound on the fibre. The pH of the solution is lowered by the addition of a compound liberating acid on being heated such as an ammonium salt of an organic or inorganic acid, an ester or acid halide of an organic acid or an a -halogenated fatty acid. In examples, the coupling component employed is 1 - (21 : 31 - hydroxynaphthoylamino - 2 - methyl-(or -2-methoxy- or -2,5-dimethoxy-)-benzene or 1 - (21 - hydroxycarbazole - 31 - carboylamino) - 4 - chlorobenzene and specified acid-liberating substances are triammonium phosphate, ammonium sulphate, benzoic acid ethyl ester, sodium monochloracetate and benzene sulphonic acid chloride.
