Abstract
Aromatic aldehyde carboxylic acids are prepared by the oxidation with dilute nitric acid, of a chloromethylated carboxylic acid, or mixture of such acids. The nitric acid used is preferably weaker than 60 per cent concentration and is boiled with e.g. p- or m-chloromethylbenzoic acid, or a mixture of o-, m- and p-acids, or b -bromomethyl-naphthalene a -carboxylic acid, until all the hydrolizable chlorine present in the original mass has been brought into solution. Nitric acid may be added continuously as the reaction proceeds. The final product may be purified by filtration and recrystallization, or by drying or distilling from water, or by heating in the presence of an organic solvent such as cyclohexanol, butyl or amyl alcohols and then recrystallizing. Examples are given illustrating the preparation of m-benzaldehyde carboxylic acid and parabenzaldehyde carboxylic acid; o-phthalaldehyde carboxylic acid is also mentioned. The amount of nitric acid used may be 5-20 times the weight of chloromethylated carboxylic acid used.
