Abstract
A viscous solution of a solid polymer of an olefin in a liquid solvent and containing finely-dispersed metal-containing particles derived from a metal-containing catalyst used in the preparation of the polymer which particles are no longer than about 200 microns in the longest dimension are treated by precipitating between 2 and 15 per cent of the solid polymer, separating the remaining solution and recovering further quantities of solid polymer from this solution. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene and their mixtures. Catalyst particles whose longest dimension is at least 200 microns may be removed before the precipitating step, e.g. by filtration. The precipitation may be effected by lowering the temperature and/or by addition of anti-solvents, e.g. methanol, ethanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, other ketones, ethyl acetate, amyl acetate and water. Specified catalysts are cobalt molybdate activated alumina promoted with triethyl aluminium and titanium tetrachloride mixed with an aluminium trialkyl. Specifications 721,046, 734,501, 748,634 and 799,392 are referred to.
