807,615. Odour-emitting devices synchronized with motion pictures. LAUBE, H., and GOOD, B. S. June 24, 1955 [June 24, 1954], No. 18349/55. Class 81 (1). [Also in Group XX] A device for the emission of odours in synchronism with motion pictures, television, advertizing illustrations, &c., comprises an arrangement wherein one of a battery of odour-containing cells 10, is brought into register with a conduit 40 in response to a signal, whereafter the odour is carried into the conduit and released into an area through the conduits 65 in synchronism with visual images. The signal corresponding to a particular odour is carried by, e.g., a film strip 81 and produces an electric impulse which closes relayoperated switch 95 to start a motor 20. Rotation of the motor shaft 17 immediately opens rotary switch 101, 102 whereby another relayoperated switch 105 closes, so that the motor shaft traverses 360 degrees before it is stopped by the closing of switch 101, 102. Rotation of the motor shaft causes an arm 16 to engage a segment 15 on a platform 11 which is thus rotated so that an adjacent cell outlet 25d is brought into register with conduit 40. At this point switch arm 101 contacts segment 108 to operate a pick-up nozzle solenoid 55 which presses conduit 40 into engagement with the cell outlet. The latter is normally closed by a spring-urged valve which is opened by the engagement of the conduit. In a modification, the cell outlets are arranged spirally in the cannister, and the necessary radial movement of the conduit 40 is effected by a cam device operated by the motor shaft. Air may be passed through the cells by a suction pump 51 as shown, or by a blower. A diaphragm pump is also shown. The cells contain either odouremitting materials from which the fixatives have been removed, or odour neutralizing materials such as benzaldehyde, hydroquinonedimethyl ether, tridecylaldehyde, amylsalicylate, methylnonylacetaldehyde and methyl heptanones in solvents such as glyceryl acetates, ethyl phthalate or ethyl alcohol. The device may also contain a heating element to heat the vapours prior to removal through conduit 40.
