Abstract

A composition for use in preventing magnetic sheet material from sticking during annealing comprises a water suspension of refractory oxides, the suspension containing colloidal silica obtained by an ion-exchange process and having a SiO2 to Na2O ratio of between 75 and 95 to 1 and at least one other refractory oxide, preferably magnesium oxide, whereby after drying the suspension and annealing the sheet a thin, tightly adherent, electrically insulating coating is formed on the sheet. The colloidal silica may have a size to provide for silica micelles containing about 33,000 silica nuclei. The suspension, which may contain instead of magnesia, lime, alumina, zirconia or calcined dolomite, is coated on to a plate, e.g. of silica steel, dried, and the plate annealed, which results in the desired coating. The colloidal silica may be present in amount 1.5-6 per cent by weight of the total suspension and the refractory oxide in 2-7 per cent by weight of the total suspension.ALSO:A composition for use in preventing magnetic sheet material from sticking during annealing comprises a water suspension of refractory oxides, the suspension containing colloidal silica obtained by an ion exchange process and having a SiO2 to Na2O ratio of between 75 and 95 to 1 and at least one other refractory oxide, preferably magnesium oxide, whereby after drying the suspension and annealing the sheet, a thin, tightly adherent electrically insulating coating is formed on the sheet. The colloidal silica may have a size to provide for silica nicelles containing about 33,000 silica nuclei. The suspension which may contain, instead of magnesia, lime, alumina, zironia or calcined dolomite, is coated on to a plate, e.g., of silicon steel, dried and the plate annealed which results in the formation of the desired coating. The colloidal silica may be present in amount 1.5 per cent by weight of the total suspension and the refractory oxide in 2-7 per cent. by weight of the total suspension.
