Abstract

807,163. Oil burners. WEBB, E. F. D. Sept. 19, 1956 [June 20, 1956], No. 17774/55. Class 75(1) An oil burner comprises a member of conical or other convex form having a cup for fuel oil at the upper part, a second member spaced above the first member to provide a passage-way for air and having an aperture at the upper part, a fuel supply chamber in communication with cup, in which the fuel is maintained at a predetermined level, and means whereby during operation of the burner the vertical positions of the fuel chamber and the cup are adjusted so that oil will overflow the rim of the cup and flow in a thin film over the outer surface of the first member. In the form shown, the fuel oil is fed from a tank 7 in which the level is maintained by a float 8 and valve 9 in the supply pipe 10, through a pipe 5 and coil 4 to a cup 3 at a apex of a convex shell 1 down which the oil flows in a thin film. The upper part of the coil 4 is in heat conducting relation with the shell 1. The cup is carried by a sleeve 13 of heat resistant steel supported by a rod 15 of lower co-efficient of expansion mounted on a base 16 having levelling screws 17. A hood 18 is is mounted concentrically above the shell 1 and supports a central tube 20 of refractory material. The burner is started by heating the sleeve 13 causing the cup to descend and thereby the oil to overflow and burn in the stream of air between the shell 1 and the hood 18. The upper part of the coil 4 is thereby heated and reduces the viscosity of the oil. A lever 11 which may be adjusted manually or by thermostatic means is provided for raising or lowering the tank 7 to regulate the flow of oil.
