Abstract
In apparatus for mixing chemical reactants of viscous nature, consisting of an elongated vessel, an agitator, and a heat exchanger, the heat-exchange conduit is mounted spaced from the wall of the vessel, and there is provided a long baffle-plate extending radially and spaced inwardly from the wall of the vessel. The apparatus is adapted for the polymerization of olefines, and the constructional features promote intimate mixing of reactants at the point of discharge in a zone of maximum turbulence of the mixture at the cooling surface, whereby undue deposition of the viscous polymer thereon is prevented. In a suitable apparatus, a closed jacketed vessel 1, having ellipsoidal ends 2 and 3 is provided with a double bank of cooling coils 13, 19, and one or more baffles 11 secured to the cooling coils by fins 12 projecting through the outer coil. A central hollow shaft 7 has mounted thereon two sets of paddles 8, 8a, the lower one of which is provided with a stabilizer 10 preventing shaft whip. Close below each paddle stirrer is provided an annular perforated sparge pipe 29, 31, the lower one of which is divided into two sections for the <PICT:0806995/III/1> admission of solvent and olefine, which are sprayed upwards against the agitator. The catalyst, preferably suspended in solvent, is admitted through a pipe 28 discharging near the lower mixing zone. Alternatively the olefine is admitted through a gas-cap into perforations 39 at the top of the hollow central shaft and is discharged through openings adjacent the agitator 8.
