Abstract

Stalk rot in banana, pineapple, &c. stalks is prevented by applying over the stalk end a cap-like, gas-impervious enclosure containing an insert of porous material in which is absorbed a substance of sufficiently high vapour pressure to develop gas for inhibiting rot. According to an example, circular filter papers of 9 c.m. diameter were impregnated with 8-hydroxyquinoline in acetone solution; the treated papers were secured by adhesive to circular sheets of 25 c.m. diameter consisting of regenerated cellulose film backed with aluminium foil.
