In a machine for sorting articles by analysing the marks on record carriers, the adjustable analysing device is aligned with the record carrier by means of a photo-cell guiding arrangement. In Fig. 2, the record carrier 2 on the conveyer belt 9 has an edge marking 17 which is detected by the photo-cell shown in doublehatched lines in the battery 10, the analysing device 12 thus being moved to the position shown in full lines; if the record carrier is in a different position with the edge marking at 171 the single-hatched photo-cell responds and guides the analysing device to the position 121. In the sorting-machine of Fig. 1, a thin record carrier 2 is transferred from the magazine 1 to the plate 4. A system for rejecting carriers when two are superimposed or when the carrier is incorrectly positioned on the plate 4 consists of a light source 5 and photo-cells 6, 58 positioned opposite a hole 30 in the plate 4, the incorrectly positioned or superimposed carriers being detected by the photo-cells which actuate a flap 7 to transfer the carriers to the compartment 31. A correctly positioned record carrier is allowed to pass on to the conveyer belt 9 where it is illuminated from light sources 11 and the photo-cells 10 then detect the edge marking 17 and guide the analysing device 12 into alignment with it by means of a motor 26 and transmission gearing 14, 15; according to the result of the analysis, one of the flaps 33- 37 is actuated to transfer the carrier into the appropriate compartment. The analysing device may operate photo-electrically or mechanically. In a modification the optical device 12 and analysing photo-cells 13 are fixed, the device being adjusted by means of mirrors or prisms operated by photo-cells. For sorting parcels 50, Fig. 4, of variable shape and size, the optical device 12 must also be adjusted to the correct spaced relationship according to its focal length. The height of the optical device 12 is adjusted approximately by means of a feeler 54, and the fine adjustment is then carried out by the control photo-cell device 10 (not shown).
