Abstract

806,288. Selective printing. CLEVITE CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1956 [March 1, 1955], No. 6155/56. Class 100(4) [Also in Group XXXVIII] A high-speed character recording apparatus comprises a magnetic storage, e.g. an endless belt 20; having a layer of magnetic material, a number of magnetic recording heads 22 each of which forms a character from a number of separate elements, and means for advancing the belt 20 and selectively energizing the heads 22. The recording heads are in a rectangular non-magnetic block 40 and a number of thin wires, e.g. 0.003 inches in diameter, extend through the block to present flat segments 1-16 positioned in an array so that by the appropriate energization of pulsing circuith 83 various characters may be formed. A magnetic image is formed in the belt 20 which is then passed through a bath 25 through which ink 26, containing magnetizable particles, is circulated by, e.g. a pump 26a. The ink adheres to the magnetized areas of the belt 20 and is transferred to an ordinary web 28 by the coaction of rollers 27 and 29. The latent images on the belt 20 are erased by erase heads 31 and any remaining ink is removed by spraying a solvent by nozzles 30. A rotary brush 30a rubs off the dissolved ink. If necessary, the erase heads could be located after the brush 30a. The belt 20 is advanced, preferably uninterruptedly, and receives a magnetic flux set up by current pulses having a duration of about 0.1 to 0.25 microsecond. Pulse currents up to 30 amperes may be used with the diameter of copper wire .003 inches and which currents are set up by valve circuits, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The value circuits are operated by sensing heads 81 scanning a magnetic record tape 80, having sixteen record channels corresponding to the recording elements 1-16. In a modification, the construction of the recording head, Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises seven thin dielectric boards suitably mounted side-by-side, each with five thin copper wires looped so that thirty-five re cording loops are positionel along the edges of the boards (see Group XXXVIII).
