Abstract

The invention comprises organic aluminum compounds of the general formula <FORM:0806182/IV (b)/1> where X and Y are alkoxy, phenoxy, acyloxy or hydroxyl groups, of which only an acyloxy group may occur twice, and a process for the manufacture thereof by reacting aluminum alkoxides, phenoxides, triacylates or alkoxy (or phenoxy) acylates with aluminum chloride or dry hydrogen chloride and if necessary reacting the product with a fatty acid (or a fatty acid anhydride) alone or together with water or with water alone. In preparing compounds containing one hydroxyl group, the amount of water added must not exceed the required equivalent quantity. In examples, aluminum isopropoxide is heated with aluminum chloride to form di-iso propoxy aluminum chloride which is reacted with stearic acid to form aluminum chloride distearate; aluminum isopropoxide is mixed with aluminum powder in hexane, stearic acid added and the mixture heated when aluminum chloride isopropoxy stearate is obtained which on reaction with water yields hydroxy aluminum chloride stearate; di-isopropoxy aluminum chloride dissolved in hexane is mixed with water containing an emulsifying agent and heated to yield aluminum hydroxy isopropoxy chloride; and aluminum di-isopropoxy monophenoxide, dissolved in an inert solvent is treated with dry hydrogen chloride to form aluminum isopropoxy phenoxy chloride, which on reaction with stearic acid is converted to aluminum phenoxy stearate chloride. Aluminum di-isopropoxy monophenoxide is prepared by heating aluminum isopropoxide with phenol.ALSO:Ointments, anti-perspirants and other cosmetic preparations may contain compounds of the following general formula <FORM:0806182/VI/1> where X and Y stand for alkoxy, phenoxy, acyloxy, or hydroxyl groups of which only an acyloxy group may occur twice, in organic media in order to impart thereto a certain degree of acidity.
