Abstract

Collagen, from which a strand bonded by dextran is formed, is prepared from kid skin or sheep's intestines. The corium of kid skin is cut into pieces and covered at 10-30 DEG C. with dilute 0.05-0.10 N formic acid solution having a pH of 2-4. After swelling of the corium, excess liquid is drained off and the corium is shredded to facilitate dissolution of collagen. Dissolved collagen is separated under heating and then centrifuged to remove traces of undissolved collagen, hair, &c. The resulting collagen solution is filtered through cotton batting pads. After dissolving the prepared collagen solution in dilute acetic acid, it is extruded through a spinneret into a coagulating and dehydrating bath of ammonium sulphate solution or magnesium sulphate solution buffered with triethanolamine. The resulting strands are passed through a 3 per cent solution of dextran and dried. Sheep's intestines are hydrated in water, split into ribbons, washed in sodium bicarbonate water and scraped clean. Two such ribbons are plied together, tanned in a formaldehyde bath, immersed in dextran solution, spun and dried.ALSO:A surgical suture is formed from a plurality of continuous collagen filaments or a multiplicity of discontinuous collagen fibres which are bonded together by dextran. Collagen, which may be obtained from kid skin by treating with formic acid and is dissolved in acetic acid, is formed into strands by extrusion through a spinneret or long spinning tube into a coagulating and dehydrating bath of ammonium sulphate solution or of magnesium sulphate solution buffered with triethanolamine. The strands, which may then be twisted, are passed through a 3 or 5 per cent solution of B-512 dextran and are then dried under tension. Alternatively, cleaned submucosal ribbons formed by splitting sheep's intestines are plied together, tanned with formaldehyde, immersed in a 5 per cent aqueous solution of B-512 dextran, spun, dried under tension and polished. Dextran may be applied to the strands by spraying. The finished strands are used as sutures or tennis racquet strings.
