Abstract
An abrasion-resistance catalytic or gasabsorbent granule comprises a dried composite of finely divided kaolin clay and finely divided acid-washed bentonite clay in intimate mixture, the weight ratio of kaolin to bentonite being between 35-65 and 5-95 on a dry basis. The non-swelling or sub-bentonite clays may be activated by treating with a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid to remove iron from the clay. The above clays may be compounded with adsorbent gel-type oxides such as silica, alumina, titania, thoria, zirconia or magnesia and may be impregnated with a metal oxide from Groups VIA or VIII, for catalytic purposes (e.g. G, Mo, W, U, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd). The clay granules may be used as cracking catalysts for cracking gas oils and as adsorbents to remove sulphur, nitrogen and gum-forming diolefins from petroleum. In combination with alumina the catalysts are useful for conversions which do not involve hydrogenation or dehydrogenation, e.g. cracking, isomerizing or reforming hydrocarbon fractions at temperatures of 900-1200 DEG F. With the addition of the metal catalysts, however, the catalysts are suitable for dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions and the hydro-desulphurization of hydrocarbons. Regeneration of the clay granules is effected with air or oxygen at 900-1500 DEG F. Regeneration of the heavy metal catalysts is with air, diluted with an inert gas at first, then pure air followed by hydrogen. Hydrodesulphurization may be carried out at 600-1000 DEG F.; atmospheric to 5000 p.s.i. pressure; space velocities of 0.2 to 10 V/V/Hr; and 500 to 10,000 S.C.F./Bbl hydrogen feed rate. The corresponding operating conditions for hydrodenitrogenation are 700-1000 DEG F.; 500-10,000 p.s.i.; 0.2-10 V/V/Hr; and 1000-10,000 S.C.F./Bbl., the process preferably being conducted in two stages.ALSO:An abrasion resistance clay composite comprises a dried composite of finely divided kaolin clay and finely divided acid washed bentonite clay in intimate mixture, the weight ratio of kaolin to bentonite being between 35-65 and 5-95 on a dry basis. The non-swelling or subbentonite clays may be activated by treating with a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid to remove iron from the clay.
