Abstract

Ammoniacal liquor from coal carbonizing plants in steam-distilled to remove free ammonia, subjected to bio-chemical oxidation and finally redistilled with lime to remove the fixed ammonia. Liquors from plants operating with vertical retorts are preferably dephenolated e.g. by solvent extraction with butyl acetate or methyl isobutyl ketone, and diluted, e.g. to about twice the volume of the original liquor, after the initial treatment to remove free ammonia and before the bio-chemical oxidation. The bio-chemical oxidation is effected after the addition of an aqueous solution of phosphates, containing e.g. disodium hydrogen phosphate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the ratio of 10 to 1, using the activated sludge process or percolating filters. The treated liquors are suitable for discharge into rivers or drainage systems.
