Abstract

804,376. Electrodeposition. FERRA.ND, M. Sept. 16, 1955 [April 18, 1955], No. 26588/55. Class 41. [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] A method of producing an abrasive tool in the form of an endless belt of metal containing layers of even thickness of abrasive particles, e.g. diamond particles, comprises the step of depositing successive layers of the particles 11 on each surface portion of a moving endless belt 6 and simultaneously and continuously depositing bonding metal, e.g. nickel, by electrodeposition at a rate such that particles deposited on the belt 6 forming one layer are completely enclosed in metal before the next succeeding deposition of particles occurs on that portion of the belt. The belt 6, which has a flexible cathode connection 7 secured to it, is of an electrically conductive material which is readily parted from the nickel and passes round two narrow rollers 3, 4 in the direction A, B, the rollers being supported in an electrolyte container 1 having two anodes, one being shown at 12. Diamond particles are delivered from a hopper 10 having an adjustable outlet valve 9, the setting of this, and the speed of the belt 6, determining the thickness of each layer of particles on the belt 6. Excess particles fall into a receptacle 15. The side of the belt 6 contacting the rollers 3, 4 is varnished to prevent electrodeposition. A plating bath may comprise, in grams per litre, nickel sulphate 250, nickel chloride 50, boric acid 35. The pH is 5, the temperature 50‹ C. to 60‹ C., and the current density 8 amps. per square cm.
