Abstract

Straight-chain oxygenated products are obtained by a process comprising reacting a straight-chain a -olefin, free or substantially free from olefins of other types, with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of 0.1 to 1 per cent by weight (based on the olefin feed) of a Group VIII metal compound capable of forming a metal carbonyl under the conditions of the reaction, at a temperature in the range of 60-100 DEG C. and a total pressure in the range 2000-10,000 p.s.i.g., for a time sufficient to convert a major portion of the olefin to oxygenated products and recovering an aldehyde product having one more carbon atom than said olefin, said aldehyde product containing a major portion of straight-chain compounds. Suitable olefins for use as starting materials are, for example, n-butene-1, n-pentene-1, n-hexene-1, n-heptene-1 up to n-eicosene-1. A mixture of such olefines may be used if a mixture of alcohols is required. A diluent such as a hydrocarbon, alcohol or aldehyde may be present. The preferred catalysts are cobalt compounds, particularly oil-soluble cobalt compounds such as cobalt oleate and salts of other long-chain organic acids. Alternatively pre-formed cobalt carbonyls are used as catalysts. The aldehyde product may be hydrogenated under conventional conditions to give the corresponding alcohols. Suitable conditions are, for example, a temperature of from 140 DEG to 320 DEG C., a pressure of from 2000 to 5000 p.s.i.g., and a catalyst such as supported or unsupported nickel, copper chromite, or oxides and sulphides of tungsten or molybdenum. In the examples: (a) heptene-1 is treated with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of cobalt carbonyl; the product is then hydrogenated in the presence of a nickel on kieselguhr catalyst to give octyl alcohol; and (b) butene-1 is treated with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of cobalt carbonyl; the product is hydrogenated over a supported nickel catalyst to give a straight-chain alcohol.
