Abstract

[Also in Group IX] Apparatus for the production of webs or mats of filamentary material comprises a drum, which receives multiple monofilaments from an extrusion die-plate or nozzles and which is provided with a V-groove for grouping the filaments together, a continuously operating ejector air traction device arranged to withdraw the grouped filaments from the drum and feed them towards a conveyer surface having a relatively slow feed movement, and movable guide means for directing the grouped filaments on to the conveyer or surface with a lateral traversing movement so as to build up a web or mat, As shown, filaments 1 from a die-plate 2 of a glass furnace 3 are grouped together and located in a V-groove 6 on a drum 4. Prior to contact with the drum 4, or subsequently, the filaments are treated, e.g. by spraying from a nozzle 7, with a suitable adhesive, such as a monomer of a low-pressure resin. The filaments 1 are withdrawn from the drum by a conventional air traction device 8 which communicates with a conduit 9, a portion 11 of the conduit being adjacent a relatively slow feed conveyer 10 and comprising a flexible or articulated end section which is caused to execute a lateral traversing movement, which may be in the form of a swirling or circular motion, or a lateral oscillatory motion, or a combination thereof. Several units for producing grouped filaments may be arranged in conjunction with a single conveyer. A serrated blade 12 is arranged to remove by impact a bend 13 of glass of a filament which has broken. The conveyer surface may be provided by a paper or other base which, when the layers of grouped filaments are bonded together by application of a suitable bonding medium, forms part of the web or mat.
